Abstract
Digital transformation is today one of the most structuring phenomena in the global banking sector. This article presents a thematic and critical literature review aimed at analysing the impact of digitalisation on financial institutions' performance. Grounded in three complementary theoretical frameworks Disruption Theory (Christensen, 1997), Transaction Cost Economics (Coase, 1937; Williamson, 1985), and Competitive Advantage Theory (Porter, 1985) the review synthesises and articulates the contributions of the most significant academic works published between 2000 and 2024. Findings show that digitalisation simultaneously improves operational performance, through transaction cost reduction and process automation, and relational performance, through service personalisation and enhanced customer experience. The rise of fintechs, interpreted as a major technological disruption, constitutes the primary driver of this transformation. The article also identifies structural challenges cybersecurity, organisational resistance, skills adaptation that condition the actual realisation of expected benefits.
