The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effect of contract farming on the total factor productivity (TFP) of organic soybean farms in Togo. To do so, the propensity score matching (PSM) method was applied to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Economic and Demographic Studies (INSEED) collected in 2017 and 2020 on a sample of 893, including 509 contractors and 384 non-contractors within the framework of the Support Project for the Employability and Insertion of Young People in Promising Sectors (PAEIJ-SP). The results showed that contract farming increased total factor productivity by about 0.35% and yield by about 83 kg/ha. The factors affecting this performance are access to modern inputs and the adoption of new technologies. However, this general result varies according to farm size. The incidence of contract farming adoption appears to be higher among large farmers (0.202% and 560 kg/ha, respectively productivity and yield) than among small (0.081% and 45kg/ha) or medium farmers (0.194% and 64kg/ha). Finally, the paper recommends that policy makers view contract farming in a positive light and provide incentives for it in other promising sectors. The establishment of a legal framework to regulate contract farming is necessary.
