Abstract

In Côte d'Ivoire, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) accounted, from 1960 to 2023, for only a marginal share of secondary enrolment, around 6 %. Within the public sub-sector, however, demand varies sharply from one school to another, even though several of these schools share comparable profiles. Analysing the reorientation requests made during post-orientation operations between 2020 and 2024 led us to assume that TVET schools fall into three categories: highly sought-after schools, accepted schools, and schools that are only reluctantly accepted. It is against this backdrop that the question of orientation towards technical and vocational schools arises in the Ivorian context. The study examines whether significant links exist between school reputation, the pedagogical project and school management, on the one hand, and students’ orientation choices on the other. Two hypotheses are tested: the pedagogical project determines the choice of school (H1) and management influences the choice of programme (H2). A quantitative approach was adopted. Data were collected by questionnaire from 133 students in public TVET schools in Abidjan, selected through quota sampling, and analysed using Pearson’s non-parametric chi-square (χ²) test. Both hypotheses are confirmed: the association is significant for H1 (χ² = 20.5; df = 1; p < 0.001) and for H2 (χ² = 10.7; df = 1; p = 0.001). The findings show that the label a school acquires, relayed by parents, weighs heavily on the decision, and that the school’s structure and functioning, the presence of features of the world of work, and the school environment account for most of its attractiveness.
